The large scale and robust weight of this platter makes for an exceedingly pleasing object. The gentle concave void and small foot brings a lightness, whereby the platter appears to almost float above the surface on which it sits. The beauty of the spalting is endlessly fascinating.
In Jonnie’s words: “A very solid and generously-proportioned platter, made from beech that I milled near my home in Fife. ‘Spalting’ is a magical natural process, where wood fungi colonise the felled log and produce distinctive and much sought-after colouring and the distinctive black zone lines. Carefully air-dried for three years, the slab was then kiln dried for six weeks before shaping on the lathe could even start. Sanded to a beautiful finish, and sealed with natural tung oil.”
50cm diameter, 5cm height.
