Eve Eunson Ghost Rope Baskets

Eve’s ghost rope baskets are made of synthetic rope, discarded by the aquaculture and fishing industries and washed up along Shetland's beautiful coastline. ‘These particular ropes - the orange and the black - were gathered from the shores of the stunning Whiteness Voe in the west of Shetland,’ Eve explains. ‘It’s really satisfying to take this material out of the natural environment and to turn it into something beautiful. I use the same knotting technique for the baskets as in the critically endangered craft of Fair Isle Strawback Chair making. I've paired the rope with bases of reclaimed timber. The timber has been upcycled from antique furniture pieces, which have been ebonised using Indian ink. It has always been difficult and expensive to get new hardwood timber in Shetland, so there is a deep-rooted obsession amongst woodworkers in the islands to salvage and re-purpose good quality hard woods.’
