A hearty family of terracotta candlesticks for tables and bedsides with luscious slip glazes and a handy finger hole for portability.
In Joshua’s own words: “I use a terracotta clay to which I add my own inclusions. I search the beaches and rivers around the studio for old bricks and shards of pots which have washed up. I crush these into dust and grog which I then mix in with the clay. As I work with the materials I'm reminded of that washed-up rubble, which to many is just rubbish on the beach but to me it provides a link back to the industry and everyday lives of those who have lived and worked in Galloway before us. Fired into the finished piece, they provide my work with a permanent link to place and past.”
What is your favourite aspect of Scottish winter?
“I love the fleeting clear winter days in Galloway. Every now and then we have a period of cold clear weather and the hills and forests are stunning. I find the damp dark weather a struggle, but there is perverse satisfaction in finding ways to live well amongst the dreich times!”
