Furling stoneware candlesticks have a glorious solemnity and a statuesque presence. We enjoy them gathered as a set of different heights, or lined up shoulder to shoulder together, or simply standing solo – like a quiet wintry offering of light to the dark. Cara has a knack with archetypal forms and tactile glazes that feel special every single day. This is one of craft’s great boons, of course.
In Cara’s words: “These holders reveal a frozen stage of the throwing process. Each piece of clay is centred up high and then a simple candle entry is created at the top. An unfurling of the clay representing the curling in of flowers and plants as the winter draws in.”
What is your favourite aspect of Scottish winter?
“I struggle with the short days of light… but I do appreciate that winter allows for more sunrises and sunsets to be observed and admired. That allows me to cope!”
