This magnificent work by Iseabal Hendry represents a shift in direction for the textile artist from exquisite accessories to objects of a more experimental character and sculptural scale. Steam bent Scottish oak, sourced locally to Iseabal’s Loch Carron home, is married with her signature woven leather and lace treatment, resulting in a curved basket that holds and frames space in the most intriguing way. Iseabal worked in collaboration with the local boatbuilders in Wester Ross where she lives, and where she also apprenticed, prior to studying textiles and fashion at Glasgow School of Art. Cruinnich is the Scottish Gaelic word meaning to collect, gather and make round – a nod to the gentle, circular nature of the form with its oak handle and solid brass fittings – but also to it’s function as a basket. Cruinnich debuted as part of a group show of artists and makers representing Scotland at Collect in 2023.
